Elephants on the road in Chiang Mai..
Feb 10th, 2008 by Lillian
The other night, I almost crashed into an elephant. I kid not. Its not the first time either.. I was driving along, at night, not all street lights were on and there was quite a bit of traffic. Suddenly I see this big elephant in the middle of the road. Not on the left-side of the road, in the middle! I braked and didn’t crash into the elephant. Then I got so mad. Why, why do they take these animals into town. I know, there owner wants more money etc etc but surely there is another way .. AT LEAST hang a light on his tail so drivers can see him ! But even better, keep the elephant in a safe place, away from traffic…Here an elephant that shows up around Padaed once in a while…

Begging elephants are illegal in Thailand and I urge you to contact the authorities if you see them. These poor creatures are stolen from their families and forced into lives of unendurable suffering. There is one hope, and that is that the laws be enforced so that this will end. Please contact the Elephant Nature Park for more information, or for assistance; they rescue elephants such as the baby in your photo. So sad; she needs help.
phu! sowas kann in europa nur den nordländern mit den elchen passieren, oder uns in den sommerferien!
Ok, crashing into an elephant is not something we have to worry about here… just about every other creature… but no elephants. What a great story! I laughed aloud at the picture of an elephant with tail lights!
There are lots of elephants in Bangkok too. I don’t know the real reasons behind this, but I’m sure it’s not good enough to risk the poor creatures’ lives.
I’m glad u are ok and didn’t hit the elephant.
