Washing machines and swiss people
Dec 7th, 2005 by Lillian
”My husband and I were flabbergasted to learn last night that our next laundry schedule falls on Dec. 23-24! Oh, dear. Talk about celebrating Christmas with a box of power detergent and hampers of dirty winter clothes to wash.
Can this be a sign that we have to move out of our apartment sometime soon? The rules here are so rigid and can drive one crazy (keep the kitchen knife out of my reach during laundry days or else…). We are not even allowed to hang clothes inside our apartment during wintertime to prevent the onslaught of moisture which, according to our Swiss German lady caretaker, can damage the apartment walls. We have a very serious responsibility to preserve the current state of our apartment the best way we can.
Based on personal experience, washing six to eight loads of clothes and beddings only once in three weeks — and three years in a row! — may cause psychological problems of the neurotic kind. Where are the laundry busters when you need them?”
Read more on jayreds blog and learn more about swiss peoples habits. This is soooo typically swiss. I’m going to do a dance of joy because I’m not subjected to those rules anymore.. we had these rules in the flat we rented in Bern. . and it almost drove me MAD. And now I HAVE MY OWN WASHING MASCHINE. Oh the freedom. Maybe I should go and wash something just for the fun of it !!!

Yup, sounds really like Swiss/German strictness to me. Hehehe, we’ve got a washing machine in our apartment, too. Too bad, the condense dryer is broken (both things are from our landlady)….but I’m happy enough to have the washing machine and just hang it up inside our apartment. Doesn’t do a thing to the wall, as long as you air your place well enough.
Ohhhhh that would drive me crazy! Are humidifiers forbidden also? It’s so dry during the winter–hanging clothes indoors adds needed moisture. I would definitely be doing some clandestine handwashing if I lived there. Once every three week?! What about diapers?
Oh my. My ‘traumatic’ laundry life story is reprinted here to remind me of how my Christmas holidays would be this year.
I suddenly miss our washing machine in the Philippines and househelp (in my parents’ house), as well as my favorite laundromat (near the apartment where I lived during weekdays)….
Have fun doing the laundry!
This is why when we were looking for new apartments, a washer/dryer in the unit was really high on the list of things we wanted!
