Rain and Dengue Fever in Chiang Mai
May 25th, 2006 by Lillian
Dengue Fever is on the rise and a real threat again this year. With all the water than can’t drain some ideal mosquitoes breeding places are created. You get Dengue Fever by getting biten by an infected mosquitoe. There are basically two types of Dengue (correct me if I’m wrong) A very dangerous one and a less dangerous one. Symptoms are fever, aching body and headache which is usually made worse by eye movement. It used to be ‘break bone fever’. Nasty.
If a person has had the milder form a couple of times it can become life the life threatening- Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever. Symptoms are the same but patient will show signs of bruising as the blood haemorrhages into skin… For this people need to go to ICU.
The best thing I can do to protect my family is to avoid being outside at dawn and at dusk. And, if we are outside, over them with antimosquitoe spray, keep water out of all the pots etc around the house. Alot of tourist guides say wear long sleeved clothes but it doesn’t work for us. We get bitten through the clothes unless the material is jeans !
Here’s an add I saw in Singapore, sorry its not the best picture but you get the idea…

flood in chiangmai?? true or false? how bad is it?
Am planning a family holiday @ Chiang Mai early June, but now hesitant due to the flood news…
How is it in Chiang Mai City central ?
Thanks in advance for the information!
Mandy no, there is NO flood in Chiang Mai.
Filterbank. I can’t tell you what the future will bring… flood, birdflu, dengue fever, plane crash or earthquakes… who knows.
Hi Lillian, I knew someone who got dengue fever in Singapore. And if I remember right we were told that the Aedes mosiquito, which is the carrier, is a day biter. So dawn and dusk protection might not be enough. Maybe you should check.
Sarah, yes they are day biters.. its just that at dawn and dusk there are more mosquitoes so you are more likely to get biten… There are also places in Chiang Mai which seem to have a higher reoccurrence of DF…
Does anybody know hows the weather condition in late july in chang mai. hows the mosquito situation in late july in chang mai. Is there any useful suggestions about mosquitoes
Does anybody have any kind of weather experience being in thailand in late july ? I am travelling to thailand in late july and planning to visit chang mai, phuket and koh sumai. I have heard that rainy season is not that bad in month of july, any idea about flooding ?
Adam… Yes, July is rainy season in the north. In other years it has flooded in July in various places in Thailand, including Chiang Mai. I don’t think it should effect tourists very much. Except for some delayed trains or buses. About mosquitoes read the post! Avoid dusk and dawn, wear long clothes ALL THE TIME, use mosquitoe repellent and depending where you are sleep under a mosquitoe net.
Thank you very much for sharing information.
