Being a mum with school children
Nov 9th, 2006 by Lillian
So this year, I’m not an ‘Elternsprecher’ (parents speaker) at school. Not for one single class. Thats quite a big step, believe me. Last year I invested hours into, meetings, discussing things, organizing snacks to be sold at school for fundraising etc. Not this year. I’ve done my share. So much so, that all I wanted to do when I got a letter, asking if parents would please help paint a classroom, I felt like screwing it up and throwing it away. I feel I pay enough money to the school that they should be able to afford to paint it.
OOOOOH!!!! I hear them say…. Its just a ”fun”, ‘’social”, ”community” thing, for parents to get to know each other. Hmmmmm I must be wired wrong….very, very, very wrong. OR… its a cultural thing stupid me just doesn’t understand…

I hate that crap too.
No, you’re right. The schools always seem to be asking for something and there’s only so much you can do. We don’t pay for school here, but they still beg for money or expect parents to paint, clean, provide food etc and I don’t think that’s right. Sounds like your school follows the German system with the Elternsprecher and all that. Lots of work and not much reward. I say let someone else do it for a change and don’t feel bad.
