Chiang Mai Airport
Feb 15th, 2007 by Lillian
While I was waiting to pick up a volunteer at the airport, I spent my time, like everyone else scanning faces that came through the glass door, wondering who will be met by who, which tourists had come from a long distance flight etc. It was also interesting to watch people from hotels and guesthouses meet their guests. There was one elderly couple who both smiled immensely when they were greeted by a young thai man. Probably not their first time here. Then the italian couple, my age kissed the young thai man, on the checks three times. He didn’t seem surprised at all! Now thats hospitality, don’t you think? And how did I meet the man I was there to welcome? A friendly handshake. The kissing three times on the check doesn’t come as naturally as it used to….

The cheek kissing thing is still foreign to me. I don’t know whether to kiss one or both.
In Switzerland we kiss left cheek, right then left again
at least the corner of Switzerland where I come from…
