my experiance of the tsunami in a poem
May 21st, 2005 by Lillian
I was down in Phuket, Khau Lak on the the 1st of january 2005. It was devastating. I will write some more but it has been so hard to put in words what I saw. Heres is one of the first poems I wrote !
Impressions
Palm trees and the beach as we know it.
Pure white sand, gentle waves.
Silence.
One road to the temple leads along the coast.
Devastation.
Cars way off the road, boats 2 km inland.
Houses demolished
and the debris … the debris!!
Silence.
The other road goes over the mountain,
coconut plantations, beautiful nature, houses unharmed.
Tranquility deceives. Or does it?
Silence.
The temple has become a morgue.
Hundreds of bodies lined up in rows.
Some in body bags,
some not.
Most of them unrecognisible
young and old side by side.
Silence.
No children’s laughter.
No parents tell their kids to be careful.
It’s too late now.
The tears fall.
