Shootings, refugees and questions
Apr 18th, 2007 by Lillian
33 people lost their lives in Virginia. Just like that. Out of the blue a young man goes on a killing spree. Lives cut short. How does a 23 year old get a gun and keep it in his dorm?? I have never been to the states and there is alot I don’t undersand. But it does seem violence is in schools is common….
My heart goes out to all those who have lost loved ones.
The media coverage of this shooting is amazing. I even feel I have to write and I’m struggling. Stuggling because I have so many questions. What about what is happening in the south of Thailand? Schools get burnt down, people travelling in trains shot at, young students shot at. People lose their lives DAILY.. Is CNN covering that? Does it make the front page ? Why don’t I write about that?
What about those 130 families who fled from Burma to Thailand on the 7th of April? All who have lost friends and loved ones. All who have suffered so much ….Does anyone know about the thousands of Karen refugees who live in primitive conditions along the Thai boarder? Does media cover that? why don’t I write about that? Am I too scared?
My point? …. just thoughts and questions that I can’t really sort out. Thoughts and questions I have a hard time even formulating. And I worried about writing things that might cause my blog to be banned? Is that why its easier to write about the killing in America, which is far far away? Oh, it might be easier to live without reading the news. Then you just worry about what is happening in your family or village. Does the news really effect me? Why should I care about other peoples lives.. and still I do !

You’re right and we SHOULD write about it. Lives are precious gifts from whomever people believe in. As people do not live alone others die as well with their dead, . Live is short, but too worthwile to live. It’s an abuse that someone can take anothers live. It does not matter if it’s in the States, Asia or Europe. It brings YOU bak to those who has to be loved. Take care !!
I guess the US media is full of it because it is a US story. But I agree, seems odd for so much to be made of it in a place like Thailand where more than 300 people have just lost their lives through a 5 day public holiday, or where 20 something died this week in a flood, and ……..
