Hospital experience in Chiang Mai
Jun 25th, 2007 by Lillian
Yesterday I was at friend place with lots of other people, when one a boy came to me and said.. ‘’son10” is really hurt.. come and have a look. I found him already near the car holding his wrist, crying. He had somehow landed wrong on the trampoline and had incredible pain. I took him straight to Ram1 hospital because I knew they always have an orthopedic surgeon on duty. We walked in the ER and were sent over to the Orthopedic department to wait. I went straight to the nurses and asked for painkillers. At first they didn’t want to give him anything because they didn’t know if it was broken. I said, it doesn’t matter if its not broken or not, if it helps or not, just give him some pain killer he is in a lot of pain. I told my son he would have to hang in there.. he wasn’t getting anything. But, after 5 mins, along came a nurse with pain killers and removed the ice and the bandage…what a stupid thing to do… honestly! We had to wait an hour before seeing a doctor which I think isn’t too long. What I don’t understand is, why they don’t take an emergency first. The other people who were there for check ups went first…. doesn’t make sense. Anyway you get to a point when you are just thankful there IS a doctor who will help. My fear was confirmed, his wrist is broken. Now my son10 has to wear the cast for 3 weeks. 3 weeks I asked? isn’t that too short? No no it heals fast in children. I’ll have to get a second opinion.. don’t want him to re-fracture it because they removed the cast too soon. So today I have a little boy at home, holding his arm up trying to come to grips with being able to use one arm only. And hopefully the pain will decrease today as well!.

The poor guy! That must of really hurt! 3 weeks in a cast does sound really short, I broke my ankle (well leg bone near the ankle) about 12 months ao and the doctors also told me I would need a cast on for only 3 weeks. What they actually meant was you will wear this cast for 3 weeks, return for an x-ray at which point we will put a nice fresh new cast on for you (which I think I wore for two more weeks).
I hope it heals nice and quickly for him…
Speedy recovery for Son10!
Now you have to find him some markers so his friends can sign the cast. It’s the coolest thing!
OUCH! Trampoline huh? Yeah, I’ve always pictured some nasty things happening on those. They are basically instruments designed to take you from 10/10 fun level to 0/10 very quickly. They maim and destroy youth. lol - seriously though, I’ve had a couple close calls on those things. Not least of which was landing in one of the holes on the side. Tell your son to suck it up and milk it with the girls since they love an injured guy. Vern
Hope that your son recovers quickly! Our 2yo just fractured his tibia by falling off a ladder he should have never been on. He’s pretty much recovered just fine, but my wife just happened to mention to the orthopedic guy that we also have a trampoline. His advice - cut it up, burn it, and bury it. Ah well, we do have an enclosure around it and we watch the kids while they are on it. I think they can be safe if you take a couple of precautions.
Sorry to hear about your son. Hope he gets better soon. I am thankful that even though I am a bit unhappy with some of our doctors, the emergency services are really efficient here.
Hope your son’s wrist heals real quick.
Autsch, that hurt’s in me even by reading it. I wish all the best to your 10 year old.
Poor boy10! Three weeks does sound short for the cast…
Poor kid. Three weeks is about average here in Europe too.
